Papers, 1738-1908, bulk: 1738-1869.

Papers concerning Arthur Gilman's work on the Gilman, Ives, and Robbins family history and genealogy which resulted in two published genealogies (1863 and 1869). Several corrected proofs and a typescript family letterbook are also included. The letters are largely about family matters but there are also business papers and correspondence of Folsom, Gilman and Gilman, merchants of Boston. Nicholas Gilman was born in Exeter, New Hampshire on January 18, 1707/8. He graduated from Harvard in the Class of 1724, and went on to receive an AM in 1727. After graduation, Gilman taught school and acted as a substitute for area ministers in New Hampshire. On March 3, 1741/2, he was ordained in Durham, New Hampshire, where he gained notoriety as a New-Lights revivalist. Poor health plagued Gilman throughout his life, and he died on April 12, 1748.
